As we all know, one of the aims and purposes of RE, certainly since Tony Blair’s Secretary of State for Education Charles Clarke took an interest in the subject, has been to contribute towards community cohesion. The Swann Report, Education for All, published in 1985, recommended the use of the phenomenological approach in RS in order to combat racism and stereotypes. Here Kate Christopher takes her scalpel to the concepts of multiculturalism and anti-racism and provides us with a very helpful analysis by differentiating between social and educational aims, and in so doing gives us a clearer path to think about implications for the curriculum.
